Like most young girls, I remember daydreaming about being a princess and getting whisked away by a handsome prince on a white horse. The prince would sweep me off my feet, and take me away to a castle on a hill and we would live there and he would provide for us while I raised our children. I’d like to say that not much has changed about that thought process, but as a millennial in 2018, those archaic ideas have long since passed. Sure I love any occasion to take a beautiful ballgown and fancy jewelry out for a twirl, but that’s about all that me and Cinderella have in common anymore. My whole life I was taught to “marry well” as if I wouldn’t be able to get by if I didn’t have a man to support me. I don’t blame my mother for teaching me this, it’s how she was raised along with most of the other women from her generation, but I love the idea of being able to provide for myself as a woman. My husband supports all of my goals and dreams, and getting married was one of the happiest days of my life, but that doesn’t mean that I want to be locked away in a castle. I am grateful to have such a wonderful man in my life, but I also know that I am capable and independent and fearless. I want to chase all of my dreams so that one day when I’m old and grey, I can say that I made a name for myself, even if it’s a small name. I know that I didn’t stand behind a man in the shadows, too fearful of failure to work towards my own professional goals. I woke up, dressed up, showed up and paved my own way in the world. I hope to one day raise children and to teach them the same message, especially young girls. I think that we can teach the younger generation that they can do anything that they set their minds to. There’s nothing that is out of reach if you work hard and persevere. You can achieve all of your goals on your own and in a ballgown and sparkly Simon G. jewelry no less. Your night in shining armor can pour you a glass of wine while you do it.
