I used to dream about what it would be like to see a real fashion show. I wondered what the clothes would be like in real life, how the models would look as they waltzed down the runway, and what the energy in the room would be like. In my mind, it was total sensory overload but in the best possible way. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to go to fashion shows and make my dream a reality. But the only thing that could enhance the experience even more is seeing all the magic of what happens backstage. This season during New York Fashion Week, I had the honor of partnering with Mary Kay. Not only to get the skinny on all the behind the scenes beauty tips and tricks, but also to get glamorous beforehand. They sent an amazing makeup artist to my hotel room, and in under and hour she had me feeling like a million bucks. For my makeup look, I wanted something that was bold enough to be high-fashion, but subtle enough to wear to daytime events, so I went with a warm smokey eye with gold and brown tones, a dramatic cat eye and a sultry burgundy lip. I started by using Mary Kay’s Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover to clean my skin, then I applied their TimeWise Firming Eye Cream to my under eye area. After prepping my skin, my makeup artist, Liani, applied a light base of foundation and topped it off with blush on the apples of my cheeks. After blush, she added the shimmery gold shade in Mary Kay’s new Limited-Edition Eye Color Palette in Sunlight (launched 2/16!) all over my eyelids and then followed with a chocolate brown shade in the crease. Liani topped it off with Mary Kay’s Liquid Eyeliner Pen and created the perfect cat eye. Lastly, for maximum drama she added two coats of Mary Kay’s Lash Intensity Mascara to my lashes and then put on a strip of falsies. Of course, my favorite part is always lipstick so I chose Mary Kay’s Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick in Midnight Red and the color was bold, creamy and stayed put all day.
Then I was off to the Tracy Reese show! When I arrived backstage, I was able to see the models in hair and makeup. Tracy Reese and Mary Kay Global Beauty Ambassador Luis Casco created a theme of glowing skin, peachy eyeshadow, nude lips and freckles. Yep, you read that last part right. While some models already had natural angel kisses across their cheeks, others were being outfitted with fake – strategically placed freckles. I must admit, at first I scratched my head thinking, hmmm, fake freckles, really? But after seeing their perfectly spotted faces I realized that it gave them a certain je ne sais quoi and took the makeup to a whole other level. After the models were finished with hair and makeup they changed into their final looks for the show and let me just say, Tracy Reese knocked it out of the park. Her collection featured everything from silky caftans and a-line dresses to plaid pantsuits, sequined midi’s and faux fur jackets. Going backstage with Mary Kay made New York Fashion Week even more special for me. I hope that you enjoy this recap as much as I enjoyed covering it for you.
